Gardening plans for March - Allotment 2016 day 4
Tips, Tricks
My gardening plan for March includes many new ideas for the allotment. Last year was very much about getting to know the soil and what my garden needs to produce the crops that I want. This year I want top take that knowledge and put as any ideas into action as possible. Firstly I want to move my shed from its current position to the back of my plot so that it creates a windbreak for the north winds, when they blow. It looks as if these are an especial threat and so the most I can do to protect everything from them is a good idea. I will lay some paving slabs and then move the shed but I also want to affix a greenhouse to the front of the shed. The shed is 6 feet by 3 feet. So is the new greenhouse. This will give me a combined size of 8 feet by 6 feet, and that is the largest structure I am allowed to have so it should work well. One big problem last year was how to get at the currents to pick them. This is because the bushes are planted too close together and the raspberries prevent getting through to one side. My solution is to dig up the raspberries and to move some of the currant bushes to create a corridor that makes it easier to pick them. As we get further in to March I know this could possibly be deferred as once the buds sprout and new growth starts then I can’t move them. If that is the case then I will content myself with just digging up the raspberries and then move the currants in the Autumn. I have also been digging and preparing the plot. My Rhubarb is coming back into life and looking even more spectacular than last year. I have nearly completed beds for onion sets and onion seeds as well as garlic. All these are ready to go in having been under the grow lights. I am just waiting for the weather to lose its nip and they will be really taking off. I have covered the area that my potatoes will be planted in for now. I am growing them in pots so that isn’t a bad decision. I will get rid of the marigolds that have self seeded and then dig holes for the pots. Finally I will cover every exposed bit of ground with wood chips to prevent the weeds that came through last year. I will do the same with every bed. Last year’s potatoes need to be emptied pretty quickly and there are still quite a few remaining. This is a job for the next few weeks. Once it is cleared then I can prepare the ground for this year’s beans sweet corn, squashes and brassicas. There is quite a lot to do but my gardening plan helps me to stay focused. As long as I stick to it I should get some lovely crops this year. There is also a reminder about the Edible Garden Show on 11- 13th March at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire. Come and say hello if you are going.

Hi Aaron.
That seat definitely has to go at the top of the allotment. You've got a cracking view there. -
Those onions look amazing Aaron, great stuff.

grow lights make all the difference. I started my tomatoes in Feb. and just planted them out. Its up to 70+ degrees F here. Just make sure you harden the plants off good. Glad you are well this year :)

Lots of good plans Aaron. You will love having a greenhouse, will you grow your Tomatoes in the greenhouse?
-
good to see you back Aaron! How did you get the chill time needed for the garlic (indoors under lights lot)? I know some people stick them in the fridge for a month or so if they aren't going to get the low outside temps?
