So Sean...Was wondering how the allotment was coming along?

This looks like hard work, I don't envy you ;-)
Greetings from just outside Berlin -
What ever happened to the extra plot you had a year or so ago? This isn't it is it? I am looking forward to seeing you get it in shape. Janice

Sorry I am a little late to the party Sean. This is a great idea. Now I have to catch up.

If you've done this before and were successful then never mind me, but it seems to me that if you made a raised bed and layered cardboard in the bottom it would kill off the grass and weeds, give worms bedding and you could compost directly on top for next years crops, topping it with compost. I don't know because I've been limited to container gardening.

i love watching your videos Sean but can you remind viewers to always, always check for Hedgehogs before using a strimmer, especially on ground that's not been worked for a long time. Thanks Heather

Just started the whole vegetable gardening hobby and so far so good. I have much to learn and even more work to do but I already know a whole lot about what to do and expect from watching all you guys. Regards from Swansea, South Wales.

Good to see you Sean! I can´t believe how dry the soil looks. I am so used to watching videos from the UK and it seems that you are always getting rain so this is hard to believe!! I hope the job gets easier.

Best of luck! Very little digging for me...I just dig a little grass out around the edge to define the area and then sheet mulch with cardboard and place soil on top. I do have to pay to truck soil in, but I'd have to do that anyway because where I live is pure sand. Luckily there's a garden center nearby that delivers soil the same day. Mushroom and garden soil mix...good stuff. ;)

Have you ever tried to just layer cardboard boxes with compost and layers over it? Everything below rots down to enrich the soil down there and everything above is weed free. If you don;t need the plot until next spring, that gives it enough time to break down I think. I doubled my garden 2 years ago and the new area was all lawn and sloped off on one end. That end I layered over the existing lawn with cardboard, watering it down, then threw on greens from lawn clippings and fresh compost greens, then a layer of straw and shredded paper then a layer of compost and soil to cover it all. I planted tomatoes there last year that did fabulous, this year I put in a couple trees and watermelon and raspberries and a few other things and built my compost bin there. The lawn did not grow through the layers and the soil is fine to work.

I'm glad you're back to gardening videos. I hope you keep it up. :D

Hello, I am in Brighton ,I'm on day 11 of my first ever allotment which is 10 rods long! when i got it it was 12 feet in long dry yellow grass, the council strimmed it and now we are digging..... i like your video :)

Right now on our plot we are digging over part of one of our beds to make it suitable for some leeks we are transplanting in, but like you, we haven't seen rain for a very very long time, I know the leeks are a little late, but it seems that everything is late this year. We are also waiting for our tomatoes to ripen which seem to be taking a lot longer than usual this year.
We are in Walton-on-the-naze, Essex. -
I guess i am lucky in a way, because i have never used any weedkiller on my plot, as i have never really needed to. I always handweed, and never let any of of the weeds go to flower/seed. Though i have never had to deal with so much couch grass. :) Maybe the answer for Sean is weedkiller..

So is this part of the plot you show when Vivi and Geoff are around? Good luck! I would dig it over when its a bit wetter. No weedkiller!
