Gardening: Caring for Plants : How to Trim Hydrangea
Tips, Tricks
Trimming hydrangeas should be done as soon as they are done blooming for the season, and only the brown or dead pieces should be pruned off. Avoid trimming back more than one-third of the plant at a time with gardening advice from a sustainable flower grower in this free video on plant care. Rusty nails do not give the plant iron. http://forestry.usu.edu/htm/city-and-town/tree-care/what-is-iron-chlorosis-and-what-causes-it
Though in another study I read... it does cause oxygen pockets.
Changing the ph is a much safer and simpler way to go about changing the colors. Please use respect when talking to others. -
great information!

For all the people leaving snarky comments about the rusty nails and how dangerous it is to bury them under a hydrangea bush, here's a tip to help keep you rocket scientists safe...When you see a big ol' blue hydrangea plant, don't go digging around in the dirt under it with your bare hands!! Any gardener with half a brain should know to wear gloves and use proper tools when working in the garden, not just go digging around like a cat in a sandbox.
And how rude to leave such negative comments on someone's video when they're trying to HELP you! You're obviously here because you have at least one question. She's obviously doing quite well with hers flowers. If you don't like her answers, just move on. You're not convincing anyone that you know more than she does by making nasty IGNORANT comments. -

What do I do with green leaves that have brown, dried, curled up edges? Trim the dead part off or remove the entire leaf? Thanks!

@Cornmuffin333 Oh please, she said it. #1 It doesn't work. If you're going to put together a video advising people you have an obligation to get things right. #2 It's dangerous. Putting rusty nails in the soil where people will be digging and spreading mulch is just asking for somebody to get stuck and get tetnus. Again, if you want to know what REALLY works, get a soil test done by the state ag. service and add aluminum sulfate according to the results.

Put rusty nails in the soil?!? This woman is an expert? What about get a soil analysis and then adding aluminum sulfate according to directions to lower the pH of the soil and add aluminum? That will turn your hydrangeas blue. Good night, rusty nails.
