Gardening: 1015 Onion Planting, Harvest & Stringing
Tips, Tricks
This is the first time I planted any onions. I am very happy with the 1015 variety of onions. They are big and flavorful. I think a key to growing big onions is to plant them shallow and to have loose soil so they don't have to work hard to grow. I didn't know how to string up onions. But with a quick search on YouTube I learned. I am very happy with the harvest and the stringing up of the onions. After all is said and done I harvested 26 lbs. of fresh, home grown 1015 onions. I gave about 5 lbs away. This bunch weighed in at 21 lbs. Were you close on your guess? Share what you thought they weighed and any thoughts in the comment box below. Thanks for watching.

Make sure u don't wash them at all or they won't keep. Also alot of those had the skins removed, those won't keep at all...

Check often while drying for firmness, as softness is a sign that its got a bad spot or needs to be one that you eat now, and your looking for the skins to be dry (crackly sounding), and for the roots to be "wirey." Also, eating the ones with a thicker neck first is a good idea, as those sometimes have a harder time drying all the way out. (Neck as in stalk) Hope that helped with your question and thanks on the stringing up method!

LDSPrepper- Couldn't reply to one of the comments below as google changed the commenting format but one way to improve drainage and air flow in 'muck' soil, like for your fruit trees, is to mix in expanded shale with the soil. 1-3 inch layer tilled into the top 6-8 inches of soil does wonders. Also, a raised bed of 10-16 inches for trees will allow for enough aeration of the root system to negate poor air flow in heavy soils.

I guess 20 pounds, way off. Did you weigh them before and after? I was just wondering if there was a big or small difference. Thank you for the video!
-
43lbs ....
-
How much did you pay for the plants to start with? Was it less than you would pay for 25 pounds of onions at the grocery store? I am trying to decide whether to get sets or seeds.
-
I was close, I guessed 25 lbs!
I am very anxious to try growing onions this year for the first time. I grew some potatoes last year and did okay. Definitely doing that again. A local store has an 80 ct. onion set for $3.99. Definitely worth a go!
Good vids! -
I say 21 lbs based in the sml amt u had u said that was 7 lbs ...and that looks like 3 times that amt equal about 21 lbs
