This is a great idea and I did the exact same in my garden. BUT should note that the melons only grow on the down side. I haven't yet had a melon to grow on the side that the vine is climbing. Saving the space is worth it but always wonder how many more I would have if they where lying flat on the ground.

That was brilliant!!! The whole time you were talking I kept thinking what about when they start getting heavy they will never hold up. Then out came the bamboo. Nice.

I've never grown watermelon before, but I unintentionally did sometime just like this!!!... I had left over fencing that I bent into like a upside down "U" shape and put in my garden to keep the dog out, Now the watermelon has grown on top of the fencing and under it is all the lettuce :-)
