For New Gardeners: How to Seed Start Zucchini and Squash Indoors: Big Plants! - MFG 2014
Tips, Tricks
You want to start zucchini and squash indoors about 4 weeks before the earth and night temperatures are generally in the 60's. The grow best in warm weather. They germinate well and I recommend planting 1 see per large seed cell. You don't need more than 2 or 3 plants for a family. These plants can get quite large if given plenty of water and compost. Welcome to My 1st Vegetable Garden. This channel is 100% dedicated to new vegetable gardeners that want to learn and have lots of questions. I will teach you how to seed start, plant, tend and harvest vegetables. Please subscribe! The videos are very detailed as if you have never gardened before. Gary, got mine ll transplanted outdoors & they're doing fine-EXCEPT for the squash bugs I see swarming them (or trying to). First I tried Neem & it worked, but I had to hand spray every day. Then I bought a bottle of some organic stuff with rosemary & a bunch of other oils in it. Still spraying every day or every other day.
Do you have vid on ways to get rid of these bugs? Preferably without chemicals & without spending a fortune. I'm disabled, so it's hard for me to hand spray so often. Thanks. :-) -
I started my gooseneck yellow summer squash 3/3 and they are about ready to flower. It's still too cold outside (I'm in southeastern Michigan) and I wasn't prepared to plant them outdoors until the end of May. Any ideas? I'm using growlights for them and tomatoes. (I transplanted them a couple of times already not realizing how fast and big they would grow and think I will plant a few in a large hanging planter and see if I can get vegetables indoors?)

I started my seeds indoors with room temperature about 75 at night, is that ok? Do i need to move it outdoor during the day for some sunlight (haven't sprouted yet)?
-
Regarding the squash, does it matter how the seed is oriented (i.e vertically, pointy side on top/bottom)?
-
Would a planter pot that is 3 1/8" be okay to start with or larger? Hoping to start my courgette indoors and then later transplant to the garden.

Excellent video...Do you also have an update so as to see the fully grown plants and how to harvest etc?

3:25.... Never mind -
Oh, I like these! These are vegetables I actually enjoy eating. <3 But, then again, I don't think I can grow them in my small balcony. Snif!
You know one of my problems? I have no idea what to expect when it comes to the weather. You say here, for instance, that one should wait until you have 60°F nights to put these outdoors, because they like warm nights. That's about 15°C for me and that would be a logical night temperature during the summer. BUT, the weather's gone so nuts, that I can't tell anymore. I mean, these last few days, it's been real summer, with up to 30°C days and 17-15°C nights alright. But, before those few days, there was like a whole week where the temperatures dropped and the days were about 20°C top and the nights even got to like 7°C! So, obviously, my tomatoes started to get all weird and I had to build a mini-greenhouse thingie (with a shoebox cover and some transparency slides, LOL) to keep them warm during those days, because otherwise they were all getting floppy and weird... And two of them got purple. :P Back in December 2013, even during Christmas (which is usually a hot time of the year), we were getting rainy and cloudy days, with some hot days in between (the days when the whole world was on fire and we were breathing smoke, remember?).@@ So, I can't count on weather for anything and I don't know how could I calculate the temperatures or the right times, except considering a very general idea of what the temperatures will be... Which may be OK when it comes to summer and/or hot temperatures, since I could always end up bringing back the containers inside the apartment during the night or something (assuming they aren't all that big yet), but when it comes to cold weather things (like my failed spinach that was happy with the weird "autumn-like days in summer"), I don't know how could I count on the weather being rainy and/or cold enough. I distinctly remember some hot days during July and August 2013, which are the "hard winter months" for us.@@ It's so weird! :S
Maybe I should just turn my entire balcony into a greenhouse so they grow no matter what weather there's outside, LOL. But I doubt my mom would be OK with that little "redecoration". xD
By the way, I've tried to say the URL of your blog as quickly as you do, I've tried to say the URL of MY blog as quickly as you do, and I CAN'T, so thumbs up for you, sensei, for being able to say it so incredibly quickly! xD That's something else to admire in you! :D
Big hug. <3 -
