For New Gardeners: How to Seed Start Cantaloupes and Water Melons Indoors: Fruits? - MFG 2014
Tips, Tricks
There is debate on whether a watermelon is a fruit or vegetable. Either way, cantaloupes and watermelons add a great sweetness to your garden. They are large seeds and they don't like to really have their roots disturb during transplant. They should be grown in larger containers or cups and I recommended planting 2 per cell and two together in the garden. Welcome to My 1st Vegetable Garden. This channel is 100% dedicated to new vegetable gardeners that want to learn and have lots of questions. I will teach you how to seed start, plant, tend and harvest vegetables. Please subscribe! How do you know if the cantaloupe or watermelon has been pollinated? What does the watermelon and cantaloupe look like after it has been pollinated by hand or by nature. I have not found any pictures online to get an idea to know if my cantaloupe has been pollinated also how can I tell if squash and zucchini has been pollinated. If you have any information or pictures to show it would be really helpful. Thanks again

Hey Gary, how far away from each can different varieties of melons/ cucumbers/ squash be planted from one another? Will they cross pollinate?

I was wondering if your cover the cells with plastic to germinate or just leave them like that

+Gary Pilarchik Great vid Gary. Do you have one on pruning melons and squash. In my zone (zone 5-6), I've drawn the conclusion that it is best to have fewer fruit per vine because the growing season won't support allowing multiple fruits on the same vine. I kept seeing unripened fruit on the vines but no time left to ripen them.
So I limit one fruit per vine which ensures a nicely ripe harvest. I prune off the vine after the fruit has set. Seems to do ok.
But your the expert so, how can I improve my yeild by another method. -
For watermelon, do you have to use fluorescent lighting like tomatoes? Or can you just put them on a sunny windowsill?
-
How often do these cells get watered and is it always for 20-30 minutes then dump?
-
Thank you for the video, so very helpful. I'm getting ready to start watermelons inside as well as other fruits and veggies. Can I start them in bigger pots where I can use like 4 seeds, or is it imperative that I use the small ones?

Thank you much how irrigation if planted in a container
-
Thank you Gary. Yes after planting them into containers, after seeds germinated..
-
Hi Gary.... After planting them out do they need warm sun or shade? And still lots of water? I never know when I am over watering?. Don't want to rot the roots and lose the beautifully germinated seeds...
