Hello CaliKim I like your videos very much. You always get to the essential points quickly and your advice is always very good. In appreciation I would like to share two tips that will help your pepper seeds (any seeds really) germinate faster and more will come up as well. The bottom heat is crucial, but to give them a little jolt, if you can find a heating pad that vibrates (or I just stick an old aquarium pump in the tray and turn it on for a few hours a day) this will help a LOT. Even the top of a fridge has some vibration that will 'shock' the seed and help it germinate. There have been uni studies done on this and on the benefits of my second tip: chamomile tea. You can actually use any tea, but chamomile has additional anti-fungal and health benefits for plants that make it ideal.
Just brew a cup of the tea and pour it into a large clean spray bottle. Add water to the top and shake to mix. (Note: if you are not using chamomile tea, toss the first cup of tea you brew and brew a second cup, then add THAT second cup to the water bottle. Most other teas are too strong to use the first brewed cup, but chamomile is much gentler to plants I have found, so you can use the first cup of chamomile safely.)
Water in your seeds with this (make sure the tea is cooled) when you plant them. The tannins etc. in the tea will irritate the seed's 'skin' just enough to promote germination. I will spray a couple times until I see germination with regular teas, but Chamomile is so safe and good for the plant you can keep using it (watered down a bit more) every time you water, or at the same strength just a time or so a week. Really have not had any problems with mold or fungus using this method.
I have germinated even very old seed with this method and had them come up and grow to very healthy plants. Hope you find this as useful as we all find your videos! Blessings. -
Hi Kim
In your episode 7 of First Garden series, behind you there is a plant with yellow flowers and pale green leaves( beside looks like zinnias or daisies)can you tell me what is the plant,it looks like some at my family home and I need to know if they are edible -
i planted my tomato seeds in peat pellets as you suggested i think 5 days ago but it seems like they haven't germinated yet. what can be the problem? also,in the same batch I planted oregano and basil seeds and they just sprouted. I plan on planting some yellow-pear shaped tomatoes and some san marzano tomatoes but i'm afraid they won't germinate. what can i do to make my tomatoes germinate?

I'm a new gardener and i wanted to know if after the peppers have germinated and sprouted will I still need to use the heating pad? Thanks CaliKim!

Hello Good evening CaliKim! My question is what type of soil you use when first transplanting these seedlings to a pot? I noticed that my peppers are stuck on the first stage of development with the two first leaves and don't grow anything more than that for a long time :( Im using 30%vermiculite, 30% worm humus, 30% of an average soil i bought and I'm not having any success. Thanks for you're videos, they are great and the image quality is very good, what camera do you use?

thanks for the tips :) maybe a marble tiles when heated by sunlight it could be a substitute on heat mat

Do your pepper plants survive the winter? I've had a few that survive. I'm thinking about experimenting with a few peppers in pots over winter. I'll probably bring them in the garage when it's really cold. (if it gets really cold) You know how our weather is here in So Cal.

I germinated mine in the laundry room this year due to lack of space. More specifically, on top of the dryer. I didn't expect them to do well since there is zero light in there, and instead, they just exploded with growth. Now I know why... bottom heat!

LOVE your videos! Have learned so much and you have inspired my wife and I to really get gardening!! THANK YOU!!
-
If you use peat pellets, and you have the top on the mini greenhouse on top of a heat mat, do you have to add water over time? Or will they just absorb from what evaporates and falls off the top?
-
Thanks for adding the link for the mat. I just ordered it!

Thanks for that tip on getting peppers to germinate quicker. Mine are slow to germinate, but some are just starting to peak through. :)

I love your First Garden Series videos and I can't wait to get started on my garden. I've been trapped at a family members due to the snow so now that I'm home I can actually get to work on my seeds for my garden. I live in an apartment so I will be transplanting my seedlings into various large pots and crates. I have a question, are there any seedlings from your video series that would not work in large containers and I need to rethink growing them. I already have to exclude the kale because I am allergic so I was thinking of growing spinach at some point. Also, I want to grow carrots at some point too and wanted to know if it is possible to plant them in large pots too or do I have to have a garden bed, which my apartment complex is not going to approve unfortunately. Thanks for any help you can provide!

I am so happy I have found this series. I have tried the past 2 years to plant a garden and have been unsuccessful. I am moving it this year to a spot with more sun and hopefully I do better. I also did not know about hardening and thinning and all the other great tips you keep teaching us. I cant wait for the series to continue. I live in Ohio when should I start my seeds? Our last frost is usually mid may. Thank you!!!
