Fall Gardening: Managing Heat in a Pop Up Greenhouse & Transplants 3 of 6 - TRG 2014
Tips, Tricks
This is the third video in the series. The greens are growing nicely. I show you how I am going to insulate the small greenhouse with bubble wrap and use a 25 watt aquarium heater for warmth. I also give you my tips on planting transplants. The goal is to keep this just over freezing for the winter. The greens that are being planted are frost tolerant. If the thermometer is submerged into water inside a plastic bucket, how does that radiate heat for the greenhouse?

I can't wait to hear how that aquarium heater works for you. It looks like we're going to have a very cold weekend. I'm in Suffolk, VA and will be watering and covering my beds. Do you think plastic will be over kill or will a sheet or row cover be enough? My beds are 3ft high and 3'x5'.

Great heater idea. Gary, how are you going to stop the snow from crushing that little greenhouse? One good night of snow could flatten it!

looking forward to seeing more to this through the winter months.

Nice video. I like the idea of an aquarium heater for the buckets of water to keep the plants warm over cold spells.

Interesting heating idea, darn cilantro always bolts eh? I see you are trying to get some more before it freezes also :)
-
sounds like a good idea to heat a really small space like that. hope it works out for you in curios to see how well it does =)

Great experiment, looking forward to future updates, .

Hi Gary. That aquarium heater looks like a great way to get some extra frost protection. I'll be curious how well it performs just passively holding the heat. With a lot of mass relative to the amount of glazing, I'd expect it to do pretty well.

Hey Gary..
Thank you for the video :). Question, how do you manage the moss or mould that will come ? Here down under - last season I tried something similar but couldn't beat the mould.. do you open it up during the day ? Hope this makes sense.. always keen to learn ;)
Thanks mate ! -
