Fall Garden Bed Maintenance, Scatter/Broadcasting Radish Seeds and Picking Moon & Stars Watermelons
Tips, Tricks
Here are some tips on clearing and preparing your garden beds in the fall. This is how I get them ready for next spring so I can just turn the soil and plant. I also show you a quick way to use up old radish seeds and plant them by scattering or broadcasting them. And I pick and cut open my Moon & Stars watermelons! Check out my vegetable gardening blog: The Rusted Garden. It is filled with garden information, videos, pictures, seed catalogs and seeds & things I sell. http://www.therustedgarden.blogspot.com Join My FaceBook Gardening Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/262500970619372/

Would the seeds develop even in the dirt without germinating in peat moss? Are you overplanting by growing the radishes when I thought a consecutive crop would take up all the nutrients out of the soil for the next spring season.

This year I decided to put your tips to work in my garden and the results were outstanding. In each planting hole went Epsom salts, powdered egg shells, and powered banana peels. Even though the month of June had 11 inches of rain the rest of the summer was pretty dry. I do not want to say that I'm sick of eating tomatoes but I'm sick of eating tomatoes. Maybe it was just luck but I'm still going to give you some of the credit. Already saving egg shells and banana peels for next year. Thanks for your advice.

I was busy as a rat this year with our gardens, and am just now storing the last of our indeterminate tomatoes in the garage to ripen. The garden is wood-chip covered (Back To Eden) and all that's left is a 50" Loofah trailing its perimeter, with twenty or so 2 foot-long beauties. I'll teach myself to make soap this winter!
Gary, it was your seed starting videos that cemented my own inspirations and led to my success this year. Sure, there's thousands of channels and more than enough to read, however ... I found YOU at just the right moment when it all came together; motive and opportunity! I suppose that makes me a Gangster Gardener!
Be well friend, see you long about February. (PS-NO LIGHT BEER!) -
What a great resource thanks

Gary, I hear the planes going over you. How much of a problem is the "jet juice" residue? I live under a west to east airline flight pattern and on each building that I collect rain water from I have to use a diverter to clear the oil from the roof before it goes into my tank and there is still a oil scum on it sometimes which is really difficult to get rid of. Makes gardening a real challenge.

Good to see those two negative nelly's are still watching and thumbs-downing (well, maybe they're not actually watching). Haha. Your soil looks so much nicer than mine. I need to work on that. And I will. Very nice looking watermelons.

Would that work with beets?

Great video, tfs!

There must be a cpl different varieties of Moon & Stars, mine were oblong shaped, about 30lbs and yellow inside, but very delicious.

i haven't had any luck with my charleston grey and sugar baby watermelons i waited till that little tentacle thing lol died and scribbled up . the watermelon was still a little pink very very sweet though is there any tell tale signs to knowing a watermelon is ripe?

Is that the typical size for those mellons ? The rind looks kinda thick and the flesh looks kinda pale.
-
OK I might try that. Those watermelon looks yummy. save those seeds.

Thank you for your candid videos. I appreciate honesty with how you garden with the good and the bad.

Looks like a good way to stretch the season, scattering radish seeds.

I am in Washington State. How big do your radishes grow?
-
Good tips Gary especially about diseases and pests. Great idea to get a quick hit of radishes in before season ends. I have trouble growing watermelons here due to fruit fly and the subtropical heat but a smaller variety might be the way to go. Cheers :)

Can I still direct sow spinach in zone 7?

I'm going to try growing yellow watermelon next spring. They are small just like those and very good. You can scoop them out with a spoon like cantaloup right down to the rind.
