Tips, Tricks
Visit my garden website, http://PicketFenceGreenhouse.info you now can order a select varieties of garden seed, Plus all the growing from seed info you need to get growing.. How to Grow Daylily From Seed Using Paper Towel Germination Method I collected daylily seed late fall 2013 .. I wanted to see how viable they were so I place them in the refrigerator for 1 month, as they need stratification .. Once cold treatment had reached one month I took them out and placed on a wet paper towel , placed in a plastic bag and then put them in a warm sunny location.. They started germinating at around the 2 week mark. I was thrilled ! As they germinated I let them grow a bit , meaning I could see some roots and green leaf growth.. with this method so I could transplant them into soil.. I was able to plant a couple six packs and am still watching them grow.. If they survive I will be planting them outdoors come Spring and then as the years go by hopefully will have blooms at the 3-4 year mark.. This may encourage you to collect your seeds from the daylilies and try and experiment with growing them from seed.. It was a fun experience and I hope you enjoyed this video Diane #dianemummgardenvideos

I worked a seasonal garden maintenance job last year here in Minnesota. I worked at a lot of wealthy clients' homes, many of whom had great daylily varieties. I saved a bunch of seed pods each time I did some dead-heading and kept the seeds in my refrigerator for a few months. Now I'm going to get them out and try out your germination method. Can't wait to see how they turn out!
Thanks for posting. Very instructional. -
I want to plant day lilies. I have a raised bed 4x8. I will probably order fans or maybe bulbs. My question is- What type of soil or amendments do I add to the bed to plant the day lilies.

Holy Cow! I got all excited for you when you opened the paper towel! eeek!! Lol...so glad it worked out for you. I have a few Day Lily bushes and I plan to collect seeds this Fall as well as divide these (they're getting big and busty lol) in the Spring for my back yard and side yard. It feels SO rewarding when you see roots right?! They are CUTE! New subbie and ansy to see what color they'll be! Thanks!! Jules:)

I would of thought the germination process would of been faster in a warm part of the room or on top of the refrigerator ...... Have you ever experimented with putting seeds in the frig. and in a warm spot ?

Oh, thanks for sharing. Great tips!

Your video is excellent. I have been hybridizing and collecting seed for several years working with only two daylily contributors. Hopefully, it will be worth it all someday soon.

Great information and tutorial. I collected some daylily seeds last summer and kept them in a cool dry place but did not place the seeds in the refrigerator. Do you think these seeds are still viable?
-
That method is really the best way to check the viability and to grow your own plants for your own harvested seeds. I am like you I always let the seeds dry out on plants, then I know they are as viable as they can be. Free plants, what could be better. Just a little time and effort. The domes for the trays were one of the best things thought of for growing plants from seeds. Nice video! Bernard

I'm happy you did this as I plan to plant some seeds that I saved this fall! Thank you! Did you chill them inside the wet paper towel? Maybe you could make a video showing what you do with your perennial seedlings after spring?! Do you leave them in pots for a certain # of years and do they need to be put in the garage or something for the first and/or second winters while they are still small?

make a vid on planting germinated lettuce seeds please or just a pic of what they should look like thank ur the best
