Planting Tips for California, Oregon and Washington. Encore Azaleas are the number one multi-season blooming azalea in the world. Plant them in your garden and enjoy sustainable color season after season. Here are a few tips to help your Encore Azaleas thrive and bloom well in your area: Encore Azaleas require more sun than traditional azaleas, however, in areas of excessive sun stress such as Southern California or valley areas, shade may be required. At least some afternoon shade is recommended to protect plants from hot drying afternoon sun. In areas with hot dry summer winds, try to plant your Encore Azalea where it will be sheltered from these winds. During the drier summer months, be sure to provide adequate water, especially while your new Encore® Azalea is becoming established. Encore Azaleas do require enough sunlight in order to rebloom well. If your Encore Azaleas are not blooming in multiple seasons, it might be a result of the plants being planted in too much shade. If this is the case, try moving the plants to a sunnier location. Because Encore Azaleas planted in the Northwest area of the US may receive even less sunlight than Encore® Azaleas growing in other climates, you'll want to choose sunnier areas that are protected from harsh Northerly winter winds. Even full sun is acceptable in the Pacific Northwest. Do your best to give your Encore Azaleas at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day; that's best for optimal blooms. It is difficult to provide instructions for every climate area of the country, so please be sure to also check with experienced gardeners or county agents in your area.
