It looks like a purple banana plant. (Yes, not all bananas are yellow. And you can find bananas with much different and better tasting flavors than those in the grocery store.)

the unknown plant looks like ensete ventricosum or Abyssinian banana. Monty Don on gardeners world had one last year for a birthday present. in winter cut down to a trunk, turn upside down to drain and store somewhere cool indoors. the colocasia bulb can be bought from chinese food stores in uk for about £2 per kilo.

looks like a African yam or taro root

The larger one is called Taro root

Your large root looks like banana tree. I would not plant it as deep as you mention. Look where the root starts and plant it there. God Luck!!

Just an update, Water once weekly and don't place in direct sunlight. The pod is starting to sprout. It will first look like small pimples forming on the outer shell.
