We haven't used the shells for growing in before but we use these new transparent multi layered egg cartons as small greenhouses to start plants in [ we add a ice cream stick between the inner and outer layers to identify whats in them ]. We use the shells to supplement our tomato plants for the calcium. We use foam squares to plant in our B A Kratky no pump hydroponic set up, with this method we dont replant to move from starting location to growing area. Just a couple thoughts.
See you in the funny papers ..... TAZ....... -
Great idea and a good way to recycle. You mentioned that your using some seeds that from plants that are around five generations old that's fine if its from original stock but if they started off as F1 hybrids each generation will gradually regress back to the original strain not a big point but you will end up with a mixture of plants that the F1 was originally created from.

Never thought of doing this with my chicken & duck eggs!...gonna give it a go with some cantaloupe seeds I took from a really nice cantaloupe we ate...wife always gets her seeds from last years crop...watering is a problem this year as our well went dry and we lug it from the spring and pour it into 55 gallon drums...even used an old cooler and made an out side shower...works!...sincerely and God Bless, Rev. Ken

You should tape your seran wrap (how's that spelled??) on the outside of the container... would be easier to get a tighter fit. Just a suggestion.

Love this! Thanks!
My mother used to soak rinsed egg shells in water that she used for watering her roses. (As a five year old I thought she was growing more eggs, lol!) -
Maybe a stupid question but what about disease from the eggshell? Did you bake them or sanitize them first some how?

Awesome. Thanx 4 sharing my friend. I've actually done this. People thought I was crazzzy. lol But I grew lots of things in these. I actually just decided 2 go back 2 this method. I have a grow room because I live in a small 2 bedroom apt with very lil walk way space out side. So my extra room is my office/ growroom/ storage. lol But I just like the thought of the calcium 4 the plants. I set the carton on a cookie sheet 2 hold the carton. Kinda like a lil table & I have a grow light over the top of it. But I do notice because they R so small, I have 2 water them a lot more. but it's ok. They do very well. When it comes time 2 transplant them, I just crush the egg a lil bit & stick them in the pot or straight in2 the ground.
So thanx 4 sharing. :D -
Thanks, very helpful

Hi, broken egg shells sprinkled around young and old plants, protects them from slugs and snails, then even helps aerate your soil. -
nice idea, I also did this with pumpkins and corn
-
you don't use seed starting soil?
