Some pine nuts can grow way into the subarctic; the mediterranean areas probably have their own adapted varieties that are grown. I personally am growing an Italian Stone pine in my front yard, and I live in zone 6b, Southern Ontario outside of Toronto. It is currently buried under 2 feet of snow.

Aw if only we could grow pines that produce edible nuts here!! But rosemary is awesome and not just for cooking :)
Thanks for this vid, awesome advice, breaks my heart to see all those poor furs and pines get thrown out after the holiday ;,(

John,
I have some Virginia pines at home. I eat the new shoots that come out in the Spring. They actually taste pretty decent. Sort of like a pine-apple!.. sort of... I snack on them quite regularly in the Spring. After the shoots harden, they can still be used in tea. I have found them to be good in combating Spring pollen allergies. I am not sure what they do, but they seem to help! Could be in my head! Maybe some sort of natural vaccine? -
I use a fake tree every year. Sometimes I also make "Charlie Brown" style Christmas trees but just using sticks I have collected that fell from the trees in my yard during the year. :) The CB style Christmas trees make funny gifts too. :D

Better yet, if u can, go to the forrest after gettin a five dollar permit- dig one up. You choose what u want, pot it, then replant it. Great family outting to nature vrs the hardware store. We r reusing the one we dug las year since the ground was frozen over the weekend that we were going this year for another. Pine for tea is so correct and used my stone pine three years ago. Love the synchro in my life via your episodes John.

There's only one true Christmas trees it's a balsam. When Christmas started it was a harvest party and back then ppl didn't bath like they do now so they would use balsams because of their strong pine odor to cover up the smell. They were also given as gifts. There u go history of the Christmas tree.

Ray Mears said that some pine needles are okay to eat and are high in vitamin C(I think it was the Norway episode where he makes pine needle tea), but he did also state that some are poisonous, I guess if in doubt stick with a rosemary tree. Great videos mate.

I was expecting some kind of tree kale decorated with Christmas lights and stuff.

John, you and Ray "Praxxus55712" should host your own youtube gathering / conference for gardeners. I would totally be there.
