Easy Vegetable Planting Tradition 2014 Alberta Urban Garden Organic Gardening
Tips, Tricks
After a long winter of growing inside under grow lights and in windows it is a great time of year Hardening off plants is the method in which you slowly get your plants used to the sun. Even the best growing lights are nothing in comparison to the most overcast day around! It will help to get them ready to live outside. I use my garage to start with because by the time I need the space inside the night time temperatures are still too low. Once the plants are all acclimated you can leave them outside over night. When your plants are outside keep an eye on watering. Your plants inside use a fraction of the water they will need when they go outside. make sure to water regularly! What I do is use the structures in my yard to shade the plants. The North side of a house works well or South side if you are in the southern hemisphere. Unfortunately I don't have an North Side ;) Once out in the garden planting is fun. I use the Square Foot Gardening spacing to plant in square feet. This helps me maximize the growth of my garden and keep things kind of in order! When the plants are above ground I typically mulch with dried grass or leafs and used coffee grounds. Keep your seedlings happy and watered while they get acclimated to the new surroundings! Some of my favorite childhood memories are of gardening with my parents and brothers. I live in Jamaica and I plant everything directly and nearly everything does well even though its blazing hot so I've always been confused about hardening off plants to be honest
-
nice tips thnx

Dude, the shoes!! You just keep on keepin it real huh? My son has been asking for those for months, I guess if they're Stephen endorsed I may just break down and get him a pair. Good video on hardening off, it took a couple years of trial and error (which means kill some seedlings and run to our favorite nursery for more plants) to learn these tactics for my area.

Nice to see you outside enjoying your garden Stephen. Thanks for sharing!

I love the hardening off process, I usually try to do it with in 7 days. The biggest problem I had this year was the cold was hurting the pepper plants. Mulching is great. I always have to go back and mulch.

Glad it finally warmed up for your plants to go outside! Nice soil you have...your garden will flourish and be lush in no time :)
-
Finally getting your plants out? Been a long winter. Here seems like we skipped over spring and right into summer, my plants are loving it!
-
Great video Stephen, the sun is the best grow light, I like your method of slow introduction. Don't worry about the berries, they"ll be fine....fingers crossed.Take care and happy growing.

Excellent Stephen! The garage door method is brilliant! Besides a little experimentation, I'm doing a 'back to basics' style of gardening due to being extremely busy this year. This video had a nice casual feel to it, like we were hanging out in your backyard!

Great video I'm real happy to see you out in the sun, your methods are very sound and your plants are going to pay you back ten fold, I have a tradition about having all my direct sow summer crops in by Mothers day...This year I'm a bit behind so perhaps Fathers day LOL, :)

Great job Stephen! The only thing I do different is, I always wait a bit before putting the mulch. Mulch keeps the soil cooler which is great later on in the season or for cold crops, but not as much for tender plants right now. That being said, here we get plenty of rain, so water retention is not an issue, maybe it's different for you ?!?

Hi Stephen, perhaps invest on a wireless microphone? I don't know if it's just me, but it's kinda hard to hear you sometimes. :/
-
Man, ain't it great when that time finally comes! I hope you have a great garden season, Stephen!

Hi Stephen,
I am working like a madman. I am trying to get my tomatoes planted today before it rains. I planted 34 eggplant yesterday and 40 plus peppers the day before. I have everything out of the grow room and almost everything moved out of the greenhouse. I got to get this done so I can go to work again next week. I may have a real job after Tuesday. I am running for city council. Great video with good tips! -
Great method of hardening off your plants Stephen! I am really happy to see you finally planting tomatoes, I feel like you this year, just got mine in too. Have you thought of putting in carrots in those beds? The soil looks so loose and fertile that I bet they would go nuts!

Thanks for sharing Stephen. Garden looks good. The red cups were the best idea I got from your videos, what a inexpensive way of transplanting from plugs. I am now using my coffee grounds in the beds. I would try to use more kitchen waste but we have a great collection of raccoons who do their nightly tours so they will dig up anything that we have outside. Hopefully the garden will survive these guys.
I have just started uploading videos on my YouTube channel. I have a few up on planting Alberta spuds in containers.
Looking forward to your next videos. Thanks for your help thus far.
Cheers
Harold
