Do you use anything to keep the pests away? I have terrible problems with pests (ants, aphids, slugs, and who knows what else!) and nothing seems to work to get rid of them.

I'm surprised at the lack of luck growing chives from seeds.
They should be very easy to grow, just don't put too many seeds. Probably a dozen or less, an inch or more apart should be fine.
Starting them inside, covered in just about half inch of moist dirt should do it (perhaps in a window sill). Keep them moist.
The good thing about chives is that they are perennial, they'll come back year after year, even in cold areas (I have them in my backyard here in Michigan, not in a container, and they have been there for many years, surviving the brutally cold weather).
They do spread a bit, but not much, so they are not the invasive type.
That white flower of the onion will make lots of black onion seeds if you don't cut it off prematurely. You can grow these seeds just like chives. -
Word of advice dont use miracle grow it kills the bees through the plant. Monsanto is a horrible corporation leading to the demise of bees world wide.

thnx for sharing. good job. I'm fairly new to gardening also. I cut the green onion roots about 1/4 inch or less and replant them and they grow, also cut the bottom off your celery and plant that.

That's a really neat little garden you've got there. You're missing one thing though... a hat!
