I live in Highland county Ohio and I get pickle buckets from the school cafeteria where I work.

What the? Where I live a 20 litre (close to 5 gallons) foodsafe bucket costs $15 a piece. Everything in the USA seems to cost a third of what I pay here in Australia.

I am using bucket s as well. Thanks for the tip. Here is a tip for you if you go to talk too the manager of the store he or she may also give you free skids to build planters.

Thanks for such an informative video. Before I became disabled, my brother in law who raises cattle gave me all the containers I could haul in my pickup and 18 ft. trailer. These were big black plastic tubes that sweet molasses came in for the cattle feed. The identical tubes at Lowe's and Home Depot were selling for around $20 and up. I put a soil and compost mix in them and planted my entire garden in them except for my taters. Already had a bed made for them. I drilled drainage holes 1/2 in size in all of them, and then put some window screen I had over each hole. The water could run out, but the soil stayed in, and it worked great. So if you know a cattle man, just ask him if he has any of those. My brother in law told they used to bring those and pick up the empty's, but for some reason they no longer take the empty's so they can build up fast. They'll be knee hi, and as big around as a washtub. Good luck, and keep growing.

You might contact general contractors or those who do drywall. The joint compound for drywall comes in large white sturdy buckets, and they probably have a lot of empty buckets to give away free.

That is absolutely genius! Time to make a trip to my local grocery store :-)

great video! I'm trying to grow indoors, so I'm wondering if it is necessary to make holes if you are watering yourself? in that case i need a lot of trays as well so i don't get water on the floor :(
-
but how much does it cost to fill them??

You should start a radio channel. Great articulation and voice :)

I'm so glad I stumbled upon your video! I found it to be very informative and inspiring to not give up on finding free containers to pursue my goal of having a pretty comprehensive list of all the natural foods I am growing for myself and my family,! I am trying to grow my own garden because: 1. I really want to start juicing to help my MS and all my other symptoms and conditions because of my medications. For example, I want to juice to get my kidney, liver, heart, and immune system functioning properly ( my meds cause chronic kidney infections and kidney stones) and to repair some of the damage done to all my vital organs from the micro-nutrients in juicing. I was just told that my most recent blood work showed my kidneys are doing about the same as they were in previous tests but unfortunately, it also revealed my liver function has been effected as well. Plus I want to eat sugar constantly to help me stay awake from severe chronic fatigue syndrome so I think the natural sugars might be able to help me as well. My MS is progressive and i want to fight it as naturally as possible. I am refusing the sub-Q inject-able Disease Modifying Drugs at this time due to my body rejecting them and they poison me and make me feel sick for days. Anyway... I'm really glad I stumbled upon your YouTube channel so I can continue to learn new things! A year later, are you still able to get free containers?

Ive been buying the tubs of cat litter vs the box so I could use as containers. But my garden is in the front of my house so I use decorative pots as well. Will be adding a large wooden surround to hide the buckets this year. I don't use pea gravel Mine are self watering containers I drill holes on sides put in tin cans make shelf and line with weed barrier cloth so soil cant get down to water reservoir. In my large planters (for my fruit trees) I plan to use crushed milk jugs and scraps of Styrofoam to keep them lighter. Also will line with weed barrier cloth but that wont last. I'm going to use a cork to regulate drainage of these.

wow thanks a million! Single mom with extremely low income here and I will definitely go to my local sams/costco and wegman's.

I have my own "HOME DEPOT BUCKET GARDEN" -- and a lot of vegetables and herbs have done well in them, but I like learning about other alternatives. I started my first raised bed last year.

Great video! You have such a pleasant voice to listen to! :) My husband works as a chef, so he has lots of these containers available. I was thinking of buying long rectangular containers to start our container garden until I saw this video and thought "Oh duh!"
So if you know anybody that works in restaurants, that's a good resource! Also a great source for large gallon glass jars (think olives & pickles) for kombucha making/fermenting, too! -
I was blessed to get large tree pots, from a nursery that closed. I was only able to bring about 20 when I moved, but I had around 65, and had wonderful veggie garden. I love the idea of the buckets. I just texted my friend, asking her to see if she can get some, next trip to Sams. Thanks so much for that suggestion.
