Weeds like couch grass are spread by conventional hoe weeding. Conventional hoe weeding is backbreaking work, too. A good systemic herbicide like Roundup saves these farmers lots of work. The dead weeds and crop residues are returned to the soil, so no organic material is being wasted. As the film says, what destroys soil is continuous plowing which causes wind and rain erosion and creates a hard subsoil pan through which plant roots can't penetrate. The Conservation Farming Unit in Zambia has proven this is the best way for poor African farmers to increase their yields at the lowest cost. Mr. Brady, maybe rich countries like Germany and the USA can afford expensive, low yield "organic" food, but poor farmers have to produce food at a cost their fellow citizens can afford. This technology was developed with the help of the Norwegian government. You should visit the CFU webpage at http://conservationagriculture.org/ before sniping here.

I am an agroecologist. May I hear where this technology advise is coming from and where the funding is coming from.

Why do they need herbicides? This is a serious question. any weeds are either compostable and water conservation, livestock feed, or edible. To kill the green growth is the non-sustainable agriculture model of the last 50 years in America and the last 20 in India. It destroys soils and bankrupts small farmers. Lets have an answer why they need herbicide in crop production.
