If I put them on a covered patio that doesn't get much sun is that good enough as far as protected them from the sun?
-
if you have a bunch of seedling growing together, just grab them by there tops and dip them into a glass of luke warm water and shake and slightly pull apart the roots

Can one plant the seedlings in a paper cup and then plant the whole thing in the earth?

If I use soilless mix to germinate, what soil do I use for the new pot?
-
when do you start to fertilize? My plants are about 6-8 inches tall and are starting to turn yellow and not growing. I transplanted once already. I use grow lights for 12 hrs a day. Not sure what to do?

Thanks for this. When you transplant and there are stems, how high up the stem can you bury? I put them in the window from a few days after they are up. Is this too much sun to start? I seeded mine April 1 and will put them in yoghurt cups today, about 3" high . I'll keep about half back in case the transplants are set back or die.

why separate them? plant them in a bigger planter and grow a nice tomato bush

I never understand the "put 2 or 3 seeds in each cell to increase your chances" thing. Surely the chance of success/failure for each seed is the same whether you plant them in individual cells or several to a cell? But using several to a cell you are almost certain to kill some of them either from root damage during transplantation or deliberate thinning. You are guaranteeing a degree of failure. If you plant them individually, you only lose those that failed to germinate, and if they do, you can simply reuse the compost for something else - including putting a new tomato seed in if you have any left.
