[Note: The Monarch Watch Forum is no longer available. All the information about harvesting and processing the pods is detailed here.] I recommend doing this outside, there is still a bit of fluff escaping. Most milkweed seed pods are just like this. The seed pods can be collected before they open and the seeds taken out easily without having all the fluff flying every where. Make sure to leave some seeds in the field where you are collecting. Creating labels. In microsoft word, go to tools, letters and mailings, envelopes and mailings, select full page, options for label (Avery standard 5263, shipping), which is 2"x 4", then ok, then new document. This should give you a word document with 10 labels. Just copy and paste the instructions below on the label sheet. That sheet can be printed and those labels cut out. Dried seeds (see the video) can be put into snack bags and then add one of those cut out labels. Just copy and paste these instructions on the label sheet. These seeds can be given away, planted or given to Monarch Watch for their Bring Back the Monarch Watch Program (Monarch Watch just needs bulk seeds, they do not need to be put into packets. The packets are to give away to other people. :) Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) Complete details can be found at this website: (http://www.monarchwatch.org/milkweed/prop.htm) Full sun. Dig up soil, sprinkle seeds, cover with 1/4 inch of soil. Fresh seeds can be planted in the fall. If they are not planted in the fall, keep in a cold area like a garage and plant them in the spring when the weather warms up. Send some to Monarch Watch for their Bring Back the Monarch Program.
