Coffee Grounds: How And Why We Use Them In Our Garden
Tips, Tricks
Used coffee grounds are a great free resource to put to work in your garden. They enrich the soil with nitrogen and other minerals, improve soil structure, and increase organic matter in the soil. We use them in compost, vermicompost, and as a mulch. Why not give them a try in your garden? One Yard Revolution is all about growing a lot of food on a little land using sustainable organic methods, while keeping costs and labor at a minimum. Emphasis is placed on improving soil quality with compost, mulch, and compost tea. No store-bought fertilizers, soil amendments, pesticides, compost activators, etc. are used. Did you get nitrogen fixing naturally for beans and peas? Mine is not natural. I ordered on ebay.com N-Dure rhizobium inoculant. I will see how it will work. People are saying online Micorrize is also working well. I may try it later on.

Haha I love this video I've watched it ten times, and got coffee grounds. You have an amazing garden, and since I'm a kid I agree with your low cost high yield concept.

My neighbors allowed me to move their bags of leaves to my garage. There are a LOT of bags in my garage - no room for my car and winter snow is coming soon.
Coffee grounds are available from a local coffee shop. They are filling up my 5 gallon buckets for me.
What is the best ratio of leaves to coffee grounds for compost, to turn it all into compost in the quickest possible time?
I've read that the ratio people use varies from 1 to 1 up to 1 to 3 parts coffee grounds to leaves by volume - but they don't say if that is loose whole leaves or packed chipped leaves. If the leaves start out dry, and of course the coffee grounds are damp, is there an ideal weight ratio of number of pounds of dry leaves to "normally" damp coffee grounds? I would like to mix them based on weight because some bags are full and very light because they are lightly packed whole leaves and others are quite heavy because they are packed with small pieces of leaves. To speed up the compost process I will run my mulching mower over the whole leaves to turn them into much smaller pieces.Or, are there only size ratios for mostly whole leaves and grounds as well as for leaves that are chipped into smaller pieces and grounds?I do make compost, so I know I need to keep the pile damp but not too wet and stir it to make sure oxygen can get into the piles. Can you send your answer to SpamReporter253@cox.net?
THANKS IN ADVANCE! -
I'm a Flight Attendant. We serve bananas on the plane, and I collect all of the peels. I also save all of the coffee grounds and tea bags from the plane. When our church does breakfast for the homeless, I collect all of the eggshells...I get a lot! About a month ago, I started saving bones from things I've cooked and grinding them into bone meal. Why throw away free fertilizer?

What a good way to use coffee grounds. Certainly a better idea than just throwing them in the garbage. I feel better about the amount of coffee I drink now!

This was actually really helpful for multiple reasons. I love the idea of going out to local retailers for what would normally be waste. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. at its best!

Great video. Love using coffee beans in the garden and its all for free.

Do you recommend a specific wood to make the compost bin with?

I have hard water so we use a water softener. It uses rock salt, is it ok to use my coffee grounds in my compost pile? Will the residue salt in the grounds adversely effect my garden?
-
I had always thought coffee grounds were too acidic, so I had only used them for my tomatoes. Good to know they can be used for the whole garden.
Thanks. -
I do have a question, about using coffee it increase the acidity in the soil is there anyway that this can be solved?
-
Good day!!! Can i use the coffee grounds on the plants that have a compost soil?

What's your opinion on using coffee grounds on my lawn?

Does it matter whether it is decaf? This is the only coffee I use that I brew, otherwise I use capsules and I am not sure I should or could use those. Thank you!

Great little video! Putting it out on the facebook page for my business Gruten (www.gruten.no) who upcycle coffee grounds to new products and work to educate people about the good uses for coffee grounds. Thanks!

another amazing thing of the coffee grounds in the compost pile is that this has 20 C/N. add some leaves and you have the perfect combination of C/N.
