A how-to tutorial on when to plant summer bulbs (in the spring) and how to plant them. Whether you’ve stored your bulbs over the winter or have new ones to plant, the right time to plant them for beautiful summer blooms is in the spring: when the soil returns to a consistent 55°F. Before you plant, make sure you know the proper depth for the holes, which will vary depending on the type of bulb. A good rule of thumb would be to dig a hole 3 times deeper than the bulb itself. While a simple garden shovel can certainly do the trick, we recommend using a power-auger to make the process go quicker and easier. Set the bulb in the middle of the hole making sure the pointy side is facing up. You will also want to ensure you are planting in well-drained soil as bulbs are prone to rot. Next, use a seed and plant activator like Protilizer to help the bulb establish a strong root system over spring. Cover the bulb with the soil and water again thoroughly. Continually water the bulbs. They need moist soil for the first two weeks especially. Then let nature bring about their blooms! For more seasonal tips like this, subscribe to our YouTube channel here, and follow us on Facebook.
