if you have land close to a river or lake, you've struck gold with those babies. if you plant a lot you can harvest every 3 days. also you can feed the leaves and squash to ducks.

Back in my motherland many moons ago apples are very expensive, I substitute chayote to apple to make apple pie, you can't tell the difference, it was really good, also, I peel and slice chayote in small pcs., sautee on garlic, onion, chopped fresh tomato, (your choice) ground Turkey, beef or ground pork, and season with oyster sauce, or plum sauce,..serve on hot steaming rice, yummy, bon appetit

Different ways of cooking them for those interested to look up on Youtube are, stuffed with cheese and covered in an egg batter in tomato sauce..... in latin style soups, or in meat/chicken stews. or just steam them up and they taste like nothing lol.

I thumbed up chis and xcaret lol they are so right. Def a poor mans veggy. This plant is so giving. Although I can't stand the sight of this plant, it did sustain us as kids when times where rough. I don't think chayotes are good raw, but they do pick up the taste of almost anything. I still cook the damned things and although I don't eat them everyone I've made them for loved them. Even peeling them gives me the eebie-geebies... but will take care of you good when the SHTF.

have you tried the root of the chayote yet? They look like yuca root and it takes a couple years for the chayote roots to grow big enough to harvest but they are really good. They're even more tastey then the chayotes themself

sounds like your a bit spoiled there John, this is the poor man veg and everything is used, just don't eat the old leaves too tough, but the first 4 or 5 from the tip are fine and very tender, just cut it back in the winter put some type of mini green house over the base during the winter, the plant will grow way better in the new season, thicker stems and more vigorous I'm sure will fruit a lot better for you too, the tubers will develop after 2 years of more, harvest only 1 side.

Your are one kewel GRING!. I am also in in NorCal, but when I was a kid living in Mexico I use to eat chayote with sopa de fideo, my all time favorite and its to die for. Visited my mom last week, she has a vine bigger than yours', we pick them and steamed them right up, my three year old daughter love them. Im not giving up our best secrets, but google "chinchayote", garantee u'll wake up with a 10' bonner the next mornig. Provecho cabrones!

I need help. My friend planted a chayote squash sometime in Feb-March and she told me that she has yet seen any flowers on the vines. I have planted my chayote squash 2-3 months after hers and I have flowers and fruit on it already. I hopeing if know the answer to her non-flowering vines or maybe it's just a late bloomer. But it's just weird cause she lives in the same city as me and mine has already bloomed and is bearing fruit already. Just to note, we live in northern california. Thank You.
