Garden and lifestyle expert P. Allen Smith give us some basic tips on growing cabbage. Cabbage is a very hardy vegetable, and that makes it easy to grow. It's leafy and robust, so it's a great addition to any garden. For great results, transplant small cabbages 15-18" apart in rows 32-36" apart. Cabbage transplants can be started in April for May planting. Transplant after 4-6 weeks. Cabbage generally prefers full sun, but will tolerate part shade. You'll want to prepare a rich, loose soil that holds moisture well to Cabbage heads are ready when firm and when the interior is dense. The will split when over mature or when they are exposed to excess moisture. Try planting cabbage for your next garden project, you'll be glad you did!
