Katie H I'm not sure how much longer it will take. Usually the stem starts to harden and the skin becomes tougher when ready. If they are already large enough and your long vines aren't producing more squash just cut back the end of the vines before they take over. The plant and squash Wil bee fiNE if you leave a few feet of leaves past the squash.

This is my first year growing butternut squash. I planted them in may I think... when will they be ripe? I have some huuuuge squash but they aren't orange yet. Also.. the butternut squash vines are completely taking over the rest of my garden. The vines are trying to knock over my tomato plants and they are headed towards my beans now. How can I get them under control?? Or can I? Help! I bet my squash vines go out 30 feet in all directions... it is getting out of control. I don't know what to do... it is about to ruin the rest of my garden.

What do you use to control pests and infections. Planted 4 butternut squash plants and they got over run by an infection . Also have a problem with pill bugs.

two things 1) when did you plant your butternut squash and 2) how long did it take you to get your garden to look that great and produce so much?

I add a lot of organic matter and powdered fish meal, blood meal, rock dust, etc. Guess I just needed to water more too. That's what I've been doing this year and things do look better. My goal is to get my garden as green and lush as yours.

What zone are you gardening in?

Lush and beautiful! Love the Cinderella pumpkin! Wood planks are smart, but why not take 'em vertical - give your wife some room. ;^D

Love your garden! Actually, more of a food forest. May I ask how old the garden is, and what kind of soil amendments you use to get such healthy growth! Absolutely wonderful! Thank you.
