to kill the grass in preparing the plot you need to spray the spray area with round up. You can buy it in a liquid or a powered form which you would mix water in a sprayer. The grass will die in 2- 3 weeks and you may need to apply a second spray if all weeds not killed. Then flip up the soil by hand or disc it up if you have an atv. There are a lot of different seeds. Imperial Whitetail Clover or evolved harvest worked for me. I would try clover first easy to grow then experiment around.

i have some questions about planting, what do you usually use to kill the grasses and weeds with so that you can clear the area? also what are some good brands to plant because this year i wanted to plant some clovers and i'm new to this. Any information would be great :)

Thanks for the tip. I have always used clover. You cant go wrong as it lasts many seasons.

I hunt over a 1 acre filed FULL of clover and it just came up on its own.. The deer love it. I think clover would be the way to go for an early season food plot. Probably clover and soybeans are the way to go. Turnips and winter wheat would be good options too.

No lime used.

I should, the plots getting a little weedy. Have to spray it or might be time to start over.

Should turn the rest of that weed patch into a food plot!

@NorthAmericanTrapper I like to plant the plots that I am going to hunt over in late summer around Early August or late July. I make some pots around May/June but they get eaten up to soon and the weeds take over. If you plant a plot early you need to cut it during the sumer. You want it to reach its prime point for hunting season. Generaly I plant late summer.

@mistermike614 your welcome! what time of year do u suggest to plant in? like the early fall, late summer.. or late spring early summer?
-
@AmericanSilverEagle Thanks! In a few months I am going to try some different seeds. Clover seems the best but I am going to experiment with some others..

@NorthAmericanTrapper Thanks!

Nice job!

@Bowhuntinhick The deer used it a lot in the summer. I have seen lots of does in it and an accasional buck.

@Bowhuntinhick This plot didnt cost much. It was like $30 for the seed. I cut the plot with my ride on mower twice to keep the weeds down. So I spend money on seed and gas for the tiller and mower. You can spend more and spray the plot to keep the weeds down but I didnt. It gets weedy after a few seasons so I might redo it.
