Bougainvillea Care - Transplanting
Tips, Tricks
I recently bought a Lovely Bougainvillea standard. It came in a light plastic pot. the plant is so top heavy that it falls over all the time. Lets take some time and re-pot it. I will be using a heavy clay pot. this should do the trick for a while. Just a suggestion about the roots that you showed...I would of snip a few at the very bottom to spread them out into the new soil. Nice presentation...good luck.

Hi Bill! It's me again... and no, am not stalking, lol!!! What do you mix in the soil?
-
Why do you cover the holes in the pot, surely they are needed for drainage?
-
where did you get your soil tarp?

It's still Winter here in Australia and I look at your Bougainvillea with envy. My plant is about 10 metres across and 4 metres tall and flowering still. It is taking over the back garden and everywhere I read I am told different things on how to CUT IT BACK. I would just like to be able to walk around it. Any ideas??? Adam

hey Bill, what are you going to do with the bougainvillea in the winter? will it go dormant in your basement?

That's a beautiful standard!
I have 7 of them. One white with variegated foliage, one orange, one white that turns pink-ish, one lavender, and one that it's a cutting from the orange one. Then I have two huge ones color purple one it's called "purple Queen" and the other it's called something Bedford or Herdford.... I forgot! LOL
The small ones are hanging baskets, but they all are almost 5 years old.
Bougainvilleas bloom on new growth and they like to have their roots tight in the pot.
If you water too much you only get lots of foliage but no flowers. You have to let them dry a little before watering again. Also, you have to fertilize them once a week or every other week with 20-20-20 or you are not gonna get bloom either.
Mine are just green because since I started my new job I have not enough time to care for so many plants outdoors and also indoors. Including my poor orchids!
Good luck with your beautiful "Boogie" ! ;) -

Question...I noticed today that my 2 year old Pear tree has Beatles eating the leaves...What can I use to get rid of them ?
-
Bougainvilleas are so pretty, wish I had room inside for one:(That looks really pretty as a potted tree on your deck it's so bright it draws your eye away from the fence.Very Pretty!
-
i grew Bougainvillea for a while great plant grow like crazy and flowers are beatuful,..well bracts are beautiful. You could prune that back pretty hard after flowering bill to get it tighter to the trunk of the tree that way it can be more topiary

Hi. Here in Singapore Bougainvilleas are grown everywhere :-) most of them on the roads are the pinks or purple ones. Usually they will fade their colour then they wither. My favorite one is the grafted version which has many colours like orange, white, pink, purple etc. what I notice about them is that the new growth tends to grow thorns. I remember pressing the flowers and making them to book marks.
