Blossom End Rot on Tomatoes & Peppers - Causes & Treatment In this episode, I will talk about what causes blossom end rot, treatment, and prevention. Blossom end rot can be observed in tomatoes, peppers, squash, zucchini and watermelon. It is not caused by disease, but by physiological factors such as high temperatures, inconsistent watering and calcium deficiency in the soil, or the plant's inability to absorb calcium from the soil. Blossom end rot is the browning on the bottom of the fruit where the flower used to be. It is best to remove the damaged fruit so it doesn't take nutrients from the rest of the plants in your garden. Your plant will continue to produce healthy fruit as long as you take care of the problem. There is not much that you can do about the hot summer temperatures. However, make sure to keep your plants evenly moist and avoid extreme fluctuations from dry to soaked. As far as calcium deficiency, I crash 2 anti-acid tablets in 1 1/2 gallons of water and water my plants. You can also spray the solution on the leaves. However, if you do so, make sure to do it late in the evening when your plant has been away from the sun for a few hours. To prevent blossom end rot, prior to planting your garden it is a good idea to test the soil and make sure that calcium and all other minerals are at the recommended levels. You can take a sample to a local lab, or buy a kit. If need it add a good organic fertilizer. Tomato plants usually self adjust after the first fruit is set and your plant should produce healthy fruit thereafter.
