Since the conceptualization and launching of the Billion Trees Program by the Trees for Life Foundation at the Reception and Diagnostic Centre in the New Bilibid Prison on April 9, 2009, great strides have been made. From a mere concept it was given full support by DENR Secretary Horace Ramos and Supreme Court Chief Justice Reynato Puno. Eventually it was brought to the attention of DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo who promulgated DILG Memorandum Circular 2011-21 on February 9, 2011. Subsequently President Benigno S. Aquino on February 24, 2011 issued Executive Order 26. Thus the Billion Trees Program had transformed into the National Greening Program calling for the planting of 1.5 Billion Trees within the six years tenure of the present administration from 2010 to 2016. We are proud of our contribution to the universal effort of combatting Global Warming. But the job is not yet done. The work has just begun and it is up to all of us to do our share now to make it a reality.
