chris it is an anchor like chunk of timber that helps keep the post from lifting. what id like to know is now that its 2016 and this was done in 2011, is the post still in the ground?

How does the wire attached to the foot work? Why is it strained upwards?
I would just hire a post hole borer and chuck some quickset in. -
The foot driven down wired is reinforced with rocks and the wire them used to hold down the post. I don't know what the fencer thinks but in that sludge I'd give it about 10 years unless that soil settles around it and dries out hard....but then there are no cheaper options unless you can build a concrete pad much heavier than the force upwards from the wire. If she's really wet water below the post can hydraulic it upwards as the ground becomes slush (thus the wire tie-down) quite high risk work doing what was done with the rammer...if for example on harder ground the extention bar springs out....You could weld a lug on it and chain it to the machine to stop it moving far to alleviate that risk. You can't really stamp the post soil down in that mess....there are a couple of other more permanent solutions. As for 50 years...that depends on salinity and gal thickness....Above ground it should do 40/50 in dry weather.

OK for a start this wire is top quality fuck ma n the wire will never rust will last for a 50+ yrs and the footing he used works just like an anchor it keeps the post from lifting up out the ground when under strain. Oh yes an how do I know well I was born in new Zealand , land of the best fencer's in the world .

could use a 17ft post?
-
Depends what type of treatment the wire has. You can also attach the wire above ground by using a longer foot if so desired. The principles are still the same.
-
What happens when the wire rots? It will rot quick because of being in contact with the ground.
