Tips, Tricks
Asparagus is a great garden vegetable. It prefers sandy well drained soil but my garden is proof that you can grow it in clay. Did you know it is a perennial? It comes back year after year and can last 20 years. This video provides you with information on the basics of asparagus in the vegetable garden. It is worth growing! OK..
I planted a crown.. In a large pot..
It just sprouted.. A little skin 5_7 in asparagus..
Do I cut it or let it grow more..
I get confused on this fern term.. -
I know this is an older video, but I'm just starting out growing asparagus. I don't have a good in-ground spot to grow it, so I was thinking of growing it in a large pot. Is that a possibility? The pot I have in mind is approximately 2 feet deep (tapers at the bottom) and approximately 3 feet wide. Once I find a good spot in my garden or sunny spot in one of my backyard flower beds I will move the plant there, but until then I'm hoping to grow it in this pot. Oh, and when I do replant/transplant it into the ground, do I need to let it get re-established that first year in the ground or can I harvest the next spring growing season? Any advice you can provide would be great. Thanks!

I don't get it. When do you cut the ferns back??? Do you cut them back? This is very confusing for me.

-
SO YOU DO CUT THEM DOWN FOR THE FIRST 2-3 YRS OR DO YOU JUST LET THEM DO THEIR OWN THING? IM A LITTLE CONFUSED ON WHAT TO DO DURING THIS TIME? THIS WILL BE MY FIRST YR AND FROM SEED.

Hello,
I was surprised to find this video for a good job, I have 200 asparagus seeds I was wondering should I start them indoors I'm here in zone 7 Maryland. Or should I wait and start them out doors directly in the garden.
I'm just looking for the best way to do it because I always admired asparagus it is a very expensive vegetable it is very nursing and yet not many people growspace it. What are some your thoughts and your experience with growing asparagus?
you said that they attract ladybugs that sounds great
Thank you -
Would you say a 75% harvest 25% let mature ratio will be good enough to maintain these plants. I have mine on order and will be planting in the spring. Of course I realize I will get nothing from them for at least two years though. Thanks!

Much as I wanted to have established asparagus in my garden but it doesn't give me luck. However, after watching this informative video, I have learned a lot and I guess it's not yet too late for me to grow.

An acre is a bit out of my league so.... try visiting this Google+ Community about gardening and home farming. A friend of mine manages it. Just ask the question and you should get the information you need. I cant put a link in here. Go to google communities and key word search Gardening and Home Farming... you will see the communities.

I'm located in mid Missouri. I'm wanting to plant about an acre. I'm brand new at this, the field I'm using also has a large amount of clay. What kind of nutrients do I need to make them really grow?
-
Like 2 -3 feet at most. I tend to keep things close. Mine are about 2 feet. Youll love asparagus.
-
Got some starts and great to know you can grow them in clay. Is there a spacing I should plant them out? They are like baby ferns right now. THanks.
-
I planted mine about 2-3 feet a part. I tend to plant closer. I have 4 planting in a 2x8 spot and 4 plantings in a 4x4 plot. The front of my 4x4 plot has radishes now and will get tomatoes later. Good Luck!

I am going to make an asparagus bed this year what size is yours and how many crowns did you pant? I was also planning to pair them up with tomato plants this first couple years.
