This video is an update on my balcony garden experiment that I started in early 2013 to see what I could grow successfully on my small balcony with limited sunlight. The plants that germinated easily, grew well, had no pests, gave an excellent crop and provided seeds or tubers for the new season were ginger and Malabar spinach. I did not let the parsley grow long enough to go to seed. I went into detail in the video why i liked those plants. The plants I failed with were lettuce, cherry tomato, mustard, elderberry, and believe it or not sweet potato. The lack of sun kept the mustard and lettuce from growing well, it was weak and spindly. The elderberry never sprouted. I think it is usually propagated via cuttings. The tomato grew wonderfully, but even after hand pollinating and shaking the bushes, few tomatoes developed from the abundant amount of blossoms. Soon mildew set in from growing far too close. Copper spray stopped it. The sweet potato grew vigorously, and I ate many of the leaves as an experiment, but soon it was attacked with spider mites. They were impossible to get rid of as I did not want to spray poison that would keep me from eating the leaves. eventually i harvested the plants after 8 or 9 months and found no tubers at all. It was baffling, I think the soil may have had nematodes. I have never had any problems with sweet potato before, it was my biggest disappointment. I am trying many new plants. I have never grown roselle or lemon grass or turmeric before and looking forward to the results. Roselle is an annual used to make a wonderful vitamin packed drink similar to cranberry juice with the dried blossoms that are similar to hibiscus. The early settlers of south florida grew it a lot. The turmeric was slow to start, I do not think it likes as much moisture as the ginger. Turmeric is an amazing plant. look up the uses people are finding for it and you will be amazed. i use it every day in my cooking now as i buy it in the store. I recommended you look at Jeff Heriot's channel, as he has a very similar climate to mine. He and his wife Wilma have a very strong liking for experimenting with different plants and herbs in their cooking, quite an unusual channel. https://www.youtube.com/user/mugsyjeff However, there are tons of great garden channels on youtube. Imstillworkin and mhpgardener are two of my favorites along with the wonderful Larry Hall. Check out the videos in my lazy Garden playlist. If you want to buy seeds, I recommend amazon. But if you can't find what you are looking for try eBay or even Etsy. I got my Turmeric tubers from a local Florida gardener on Etsy. Thanks again and don't forget I add new videos every week.
