Back to Eden Heirloom Garden - Year 2 in Utah
Tips, Tricks
My garden is growing great. All of my seeds have sprouted and the Back to Eden "to till" method is working for the 2nd year. I'm buying my garden seeds from two places. 1. http://www.mcssl.com/store/calebwarnock 2. http://migardener.com/store/ I have also learned a few really important tricks about how to water you garden from Caleb Warnock "Utah Permaculture Expert"

get another layer of chips to keep the weeds down, or plant cover crops like clover or other legumes or ground covers to outcompete the weeds

are you giving up on that mittleider thing?

Silly rhetoric question - ofcourse you can't feed your family on 200 m2. You need an acre per person if you REALLY KNOW how to work hard and how to design complex systems. Check out "permaculture" and Geoff Lawton to learn couple of things. Where are your proteins? rabbits, chickens, fish, aquaculture seems legit since you have such a limited space. Enjoy your journey!

In researching bindweed, there is a bindweed mite that can be bought through Colorado extension service Palisades office. https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/agconservation/request-bug I cannot speak for their effectiveness, but I am planning to order some to try.

Kyle, I have bindweed EVERYWHERE. I have specific sections of my yard I have been using different control methods with. I have three methods that are working better than others. 1) Flame Weeder - Doesn't stop it, but it stops growing as vines and forms into more of a bushlike weed, that is easier to deal with (and its very fun to torch them...just don't light your mulch on fire like I did), 2) Mulch - I have a large area with trees that was a weed patch when I bought the property, I put a REALLY deep layer of mulch (Tucker as well) AND cardboard. Two years later I get a couple of rogue bindweed, but very few and they take a long time to grow back after they are pulled, 3) Oscillating hoe.....this thing is magic, it's a lot of work to begin with, but everywhere I have used it you can visibly see the bindweed coming back weaker each time it regrows.....I have a few more things I am going to try, I am few miles from you and the bind weed here is EPIC....We should run some Bindweed extermination experiments :)

I appreciate how you added "if you do it right" Not going to lie, I subscribed to your channel for that reason alone. That said, your videos are great. Super content and you have a great delivery. Thanks and I look forward to more.

How thick are your wood chips? I put them in 5 to 6 inches deep on top of the soil, but pull it away just around the base of plant until the plant gets established. It worked great for me last year, I never got a weed but had great harvest (Im in UT too). I used older 1 year + old chips.

Nice video--wish my garden was as yours!
Just as any experiment, I wonder what would happen if you take the wood chip--that are already in chip form--and ground them down to a kind of granular form??
Also, I recently watched a video that claimed wood chip are treated with chemicals--either the logs are treated before they become wood chips or the chips themselves are treated with chemicals! So, is there a way to get chips that are not treated? The video I speak of was chips that you get from big box stores and also those you get from chip farms.
I have purchased several bags of "red" mulch (which I think are chips that have been dyed red!!??) that I was going to use to pretty-up my garden--now i hesitate!!
Any thoughts--Thanks -
Glad to see you are using heirloom seeds.Very nice setup

What are the chunks of wood for and the red cups in the fence? How about the sweet potato you planted last year, is it coming up and growing?

You have field bindweed, a cousin of morning glory. It's a dreadful weed, because it self sows, it will root from pieces of stem and root left behind when you pull it out. Worse still, it's perennial, and can regrow from the roots up to two feet down. I believe that no-till is probably the only method that has a chance to get rid of it.
-
Thanks for the update and I feel your pain on the morning glory, I have to fight field bind weed all time.
-
is back to eden like permaculture? you guys are a month ahead if us in Eastern Idaho. my advice for morning glory is just to spray the heck out of it. I know you don't want to, but it might be the only way. one patch at a time?

Your garden is growing beautifully. I have the same problem but with these white flowers that fall in my raised bed, They throw these heavy roots in just a few days. Everyday I have to check it to make sure that they don't grow. I just got it fenced now I going to cover the top. Those things are a pest. Loved and Subbed Great video

Sorry... you'll never get rid of it...

I have the same problem with Bermuda grass in my garden! It is tough to eradicate! Darn stuff! Keep at it. It'll exhaust its energy and give up.
