Asparagus Beds in the Fall & Winter: How to prepare your bed for a great crop next spring!
Tips, Tricks
In the episode you will learn the simple process to clean and prep your Asparagus bed for the Winter so you will have the best crop of healthy, nutrient rich, flavorful, asparagus in the Spring. 1. Cut out all yellowing and green asparagus spears an inch or two below ground level. 2. Clean out ALL the Weeds! 3. Rake back old mulch (save to re-use or compost) 4. Compost the old asparagus fern plants 5. Add Azomite "Rock Dust" --Azomite which stands for A to Z of Minerals including trace elements 6. Add the Compost (I used Cotton Burr Compost) 7. Add new Mulch (I used Cedar; keeps snakes away; supposedly) 8. Water in & Your Finished! ☆ See more of our Vegetable Gardening adventures on our blog... http://www.thelifeandtimesofthemarshalls.com/search/label/Garden Grown locally in Dallas, Texas, USA © Brandon Marshall. When I cut the green fern stems all the Asparagus died.
next planting they told me to never cut the fern stems as long as they are green - as I found out the year before.
But after 12 years - all I still get are the long fern stems and no asparagus stems. Why ?
Are the fern stems eatable since that is all I get ? -
I am sure you can still buy handbook with all info you need on woodprix. Just google it.

I used leaves from my brother-in-laws garden last fall. There were a lot of acorns mixed in with it. I had a terrible crop this past year. I don't know what the problem was. I'm reluctant to use his leaves again. What happens when you have a poor crop?

I'm at the end of my first year and now, even if I am not harvesting the asparagus how do I prepare for the winter, wouldn't cutting or breaking the asparagus off be the same as harvesting it. Do you wait for it to yellow?

I've heard that you use the asparagus ferns as much and do not cut them down!

I use simple hay from the local farm store to mulch once I've planted my garden. It keeps the weeds at bay and I can till it into the soil in the fall. I don't till my asparagus of course, I do keep asparagus separated from all other vegetables though, as it doesn't like being near other veggies. I also use a 10-20-10 fertilizer for everything including the lawn, garden and flower gardens. Plants love their phosphorous! Looking forward to next spring as it will be the first year I may get a good crop of asparagus. I also have pecan trees, fig trees and grapes. Good luck to all.

thanks, and guys stop beating him up.

walking on the bed ? that only compacts it and the last thing you want to do. P.S I used to grow 2 million roots per year

Are the ferns edible such as for juicing, and is it harmful to cut them as you harvest?

Great video clip Brandon, it always amuses me how Americans pronounce the word compost.

Thanks for this.I already cut them down and cleaned the bed and added the compost. Is it too late to add the rock dust?? I also have some cedar mulch that I haven't put on yet.Thanks...Cathy

this is my 2nd year with my asparagus, it came up clumped together and little spindles have been coming up all summer, plus I have a bunch of spears to come up but then they go to seed, they are about 5 feet tall and I have to tie them up I live in zone 7 what should I be doing now in Sept.

20 lbs of Azomite to that so small bed???? I just sprinkle the stuff. Am i adding to little and you too much? And cedar mulch??? That's the last thing I'd put on. To my understanding (from what I've heard) cedar might suppress weed growth, but i'd think it would at least retard the asparagus growth too, no?

Nice video. Not sure where you are from. I am in Ohio, and I do mine about the same as you Brandon. I cut mine back just today, (Nov. 14) I wait for them to pretty much be in full dormant mode. I use my grass clippings and what leaves fall into the grass. It works wonderful. I would just say, to people looking, I use 12-12-12 fertilizer, and sometimes horse manure. But, I fertilize my Asparagus in the spring and fall with 12-12-12. I love how sweet my asparagus is, nothing like the grocery stores.
