An easy way to mulch and prevent weeds in the garden is to lay out newspaper and/or cardboard to cover the ground and then cover with wood chips or other mulching material. This way, you don’t need as much mulch and it completely smothers the weeds so you don’t have weeds coming up. It’s a great way to kill and prevent weeds and it’s also a good way to make inexpensive garden paths. If you use this method to mulch around existing plants, arrange the paper and cardboard so that it leaves space for the plants. If you want to add additional plants later, simply poke a small hole in the paper or cardboard for each one. You should put rocks up near your fence or wall as the mulch will encourage termites. I'd put a foot or so of rocks or gravel then start my mulch from there onward.

Q: Are you sure that a paint used on newspapers isn't toxic? As far as I know, they use lead for printing newspapers. Tnx

Good tip! I was gonna do that with the newspaper only but I like your idea of using both paper and cardboard. Question tho. Do you have to redo it every year? I know that paper breaks down.
