The leaves are cut in half to reduce water loss from them, they dont need much leaf. Also its less likely that the leaves will touch and spread fungal infections. I do a similar thing with pelargoniums that are very leafy.

hey! i see a lot of comments so i might try to answer them since the poster wont!
about grit:
horticultural grit is generally either made of granite or limestone, and deciding which to use depends on your soil's alkaline or acidic level (which depends on your geographic location)! it allows drainage of water which will hopefully reduce root rot and other things.
i believe that cutting the larger leaves in half serves two purposes: avoids overcrowding of the leaves (and subsequently avoids fungal infections/dry mold/etc), and it helps the new cutting to put its energy into making new roots instead of larger leaves.
hope this helped, even if it's a bit late for some of you! +blueray1969 +Carolyn Tierney +Bas van Amstel (Asthma) -
great video but it's a shame you haven't responded to any of the questions people asked you: what is grit and why cut the leaves in half.

Thanks very much for sharing, very useful

What exactly is grit? I have been trying to find good coarse sand for my cactus, succulent, and herb soil, and I can't find anything decent. Someone said I should use "turkey grit". Where can I find this?
