Allotment Diary : Winter digging the Vegetable Plot
Tips, Tricks
Veg growing blog @ : http://www.allotment-diary.co.uk Winter's coming, the growing season is coming to an end so it's time to start the task of Winter digging the vegetable beds and adding important manure compost and organic matter. Firstly I just clear the plot of any old plants then dig out any perennial weeds like nettles docks and thistles. Then add as much compost and well rotted manure onto the surface as you can lay your hands on. Then the job of digging. I just turn the soil over to a spade depth but don't break the soil up, leaving it in big clods. The Winter rain and frosts will now do all the work and slowly break down the clumps of soil and by Spring all that I'll do is to use a hand cultivator to form a fine soil tilth.

I've got a big allotment to dig over and was a recommended an azada digging hoe. It tried it for the first time last week and it makes digging over so much quicker and easier on your back. Totally recommend them. Amazon has a few options..

It's like "Day of the Triffids" with your Marrows. That's some good crap that manure. I'm waiting to get some for my plot, I'm hoping a friend can help as she has a trailer and tow bar.

Have you noticed that 'Hairy Bitter Cress' throws out seeds when you touch it. I've done a video of 'Albino Marrow' and I'll let you have some seeds when I cut it open.

As you will have a lot of time on your hands Dan maybe you could watch this video youtube.com/watch?v=qSRIX8zLy64. Yes I know it's in French but there is a captions button which will give you English subtitles. The captions button is on the same line as the expand and watch later button in the bottom right of the video panel. Maybe it will be worth an experiment in the allotment.

Dan you seem to have this amazing ability to make even a boring video interesting. One question though ,could you not just leave the compost and manure on the surface and let nature, frost and the worms do it for you? cheers simon
