Allotment Diary : Planting out Onion Sets : How to sow Onion Sets in a raised bed easily
Tips, Tricks
http://www.allotment-diary.co.uk Just a quick video of how I plant out my onion sets in one of my raised beds on the allotment. Dead simple, just push each individual onion set into the soil about 6" apart so that just the tip is above ground, and that's about it. Please have a look at my veg growing diary website. Thanks. I can't hear you

I'm looking to replace my usual supermarket bought onions with garden grown ones but what do I need for a constant supply of onions all year round, heated greenhouse?
-
Thank you. Just bought some red onion sets to grow and the pack says plant them 15 cm deep! 6"????? - I thought not. Obviously meant to be 15 mm! Cheers.
-
Well done.

How often would you water & feed them from when you plant them out?
-
i know you get pretty good results with the onion sets. Have you tried from seed though? I am growing onions from seed this year, i know they take longer to bulb up but i have heard mix results about whether its best to grow from seed or from set. i would love to know what you think!

@allotmentdiary when farmers plant there crops, the whole field is planted, north-south or east-west its all the same to them, it cant make that much difference
-
I don't know how you do it. I really do have garden envy.
-
May Iask you, are you using green treated wood for edging your plot? Thx.
-
@allotmentdiary thanks Dan, I might put half in the ground now and start the other half off in the polytunnel in the way you suggest and see how I go :-)

great video! I have some sets waiting to go in, would now be the right time to plant in the north of Scotland? keep the great videos coming :)
-
@allotmentdiary Thanks Dan, the reason I do N-S is because I feel the E-W set-up would cast more shade on the row behind. Your staggered planting would optimise sun but make maintenance a nightmare. I'll stay N-S I think. Brendan

I do onions in raised beds and always plant them in rows running North - South. Is there any difference in planting them in rows running East - West? That question is possibly as a-retentive as your marked out planting stick (I have two of them for 4 different spacings. Best Wishes, Brendan

Good video! I'm gonna try onions from seed this year..both started indoor, and outdoors. If it doesn't work I guess I'll go with bulbs like you did ;) I guess it's way easier too!
