Allotment Diary : Planting Onions & Sowing the polytunnel Gutter Peas
Tips, Tricks
The first sunny evening for weeks so time to plant out the Onions into the raised beds outside. These have been grown on in modules in the polytunnel for an earlier start. Then Sowing the peas in the guttering in the polytunnel, again for a quicker start. This way gave me great results last year and the soil is just too cold and wet at the moment so direct sow outside. So we're up and growing this year. Happy Easter folks.. Please visit my Website : http://www.allotment-diary.co.uk Facebook Page : https://www.facebook.com/pages/Allotment-Diarycouk/119640048156011

Hi Dan, Can you grow shallots and onions next to each other? I have some Sturron sets ready to go out, and following your videos, I also sowed some Zebrune, however all this companion planting stuff confuses me, as some sites suggest that shallots and onions can't grow in the same space, please may you confirm? Kind regards

hi dan did my spring onions in mod, best result ever, thanks for the tip, hope you have a good season this year.keep up with the vids great stuff me old china.

I didn't have any gutter pipe so cut pop bottles lengthwise with top end cut off ( made 12 x 10 inch lengths) and used as same. 6 bottles did more than enough! Slides in just same as guttering.

Think i planted mine in guttering on the 4th, just starting to poke up already! this method with soaking them overnight gets them off to a flying start!
Regards, Matt -
Why don't I get the results you do,I've got the same watering can as you. Thanks, keep the advice coming.

+allotmentdiary My onion sets and transplants don't seem to be doing to well. The sets will grow leaves but refuse to bulb and the transplants aren't showing any signs of change from when I planted them(though my mom says I'm just being impatient). Do you have any advice for getting your onions set to bulbs?

You've got a lot going on there, but I like your style of planting peas. Kim

Hi Dan, what type of land do you grow on? I hope to soon be getting some agricultural land to grow on. I'm also in Yorkshire and wonder if you had any issues regarding planning for the polytunnel as its something I'd like to add to my plot.

Dan
My main onion from seed (Mammoth & Bedfordshire Champion) have been in 3" pots over 6 weeks now. I can't see them going out for a while yet. I read that the compost has enough food for about 6 weeks. Should I start liquid feeding them soon and if so, what do you recommend?
Cheers

How do you fertilize your onions?

Hi Dan, It's good to see some progress. The other week you said about meeting some chap in a lay-by to get some Giants. Did you get them o.k. and if so when are you thinking of putting them in.

Is it not best to put them out side to harden off as this will stop them bolting

Arr tha doin Dan, Onions looking well and it looks a lot warmer than it is darn in Barnsley. That's the best way to sow peas but I soak them overnight first, give it a go with a row
