Allotment Diary June 21 : Vegetable Plot, Greenhouse & Polytunnel Veg Gardening Update
Tips, Tricks
The latest Fortnightly vegetable gardening update from my Allotment Plot, Greenhouse & Polytunnel. I'm really happy with the tomatoes chillies cucumbers and peppers in the greenhouse and have a few fruit set already The recent few days of warm weather plus a decent amount of rain has really helped to make the veg grow outside. The potatoes in containers have flown along and are now fully topped up with compost and growing really well. The Lettuce are ready to harvest now and the peas are producing the first flowers of the year. Cabbages are doing well and starting to bulk out a bit. The Garlic has come back to life after the rain and now looks very healthy. The giant Marrows are ticking along and should start to grow quickly soon. In the polytunnel the giant veg is doing well. The Giant Onions are bigger than I've grown at this time before and the carrots are flying along. Courgettes are producing fruit now. I've been harvesting some of the lettuces recently too. So far so good. Happy Gardening.

How are your courgettes doing?

Arrrgh. This is the first year I have grown anything. I thought my red onions were doing great. Now I see the seed head that has grown on ALL mine is because they have bolted.

Whats the trick to bell peppers? I sewed some early in the year and they grew about 3 inches tall with real leaves. Planted them in the greenhouse and they never grew any further. The only thing I can think of is they don't like full sunlight.

Hi Dan. Just a quick update on my potato harvest so far as I've followed your way of doing them in pots.
Up to now I've harvested all my 1st early spuds (Pentland Javelin). 3 x 15 ltr pots with 2 x seed spuds in them fed with potato magic/spuds galore. Same stuff.
Pot 1 harvested after 108 days. = 1.75 Ib.
Pot 2 harvested after 112 days = 2.45 Ib
Pot 3 harvested after 119 days = 3.14 Ib.
Just harvested a pot of my second early crop. I have 4 x 15 Itr pots with 3 x seed spuds in each one. Should have just put 2 seeds in the 15 Ltr really but never mind.
Pot 1 harvested after only 95 days = 6.75 Ib.
Had loads of small one in the pot too so I think planting 2 seeds instead of 3 will be better for next year.
Still have another 3 x 15 Ltr pots of those to harvest a little later
Also have 3 x 30 Ltr pots of Sarpo mira with 2 x seeds spuds planted in each one to harvest later and 2 x 30 Ltr pots of Nadine.I will update on the results later on.
Thanks for all the Youtube tips Dan. -

I Love your videos, Thank you.

Please send an inch of rain to NW London - drought is playing havoc with the garden. Spring crops were great, but summer stuff will be massacred if July is as dry as June...........

Congrats on those cucumbers. They don't usually do well for me either, but it looks like you found the secret to their success this season. Please let me in on it. Everything looks wonderful, Dan.

Thanks for sharing your latest video Dan, ? Sweet Peppers looking at yours and one I have been given, do you need to take the tops out for them to split or do they do it naturally 😕.
😆Happy growing

As usual a good video Dan. Darn Sarf were having our first rain today after long dry spell. Just one query, I followed you on the spring onions (doing well) in the cube trays Do they stay in the tray or do you plant them out?
Cheers

oh and while i'm here, do you have to pollinate the veggies in your polytunnel or do bees and insects etc still get in there and do it for you? cheers!
