Allotment Diary April 26 : Planting this years exhibition show potatoes out in polypots
Tips, Tricks
This is how I plant and grow the potatoes for exhibiting at the shows. I use 17 litre polypots and simply place 1 seed potato on top of about 3" of compost with 2oz of fertilizer added. I remove and dig out the sprouts to leave just 2 so that there will be fewer but larger potatoes growing in the bag. Then I simply fill the bag to the top with more compost. The bags are then placed in trenches with more fertilizer added and then the soil heaped up around the bags to cover all the drainage holes. I'm growing Kestrel and Amour this year as they are a nice looking potato but also they are great to eat too once all the rejects are left to eat. http://www.allotment-diary.co.uk

Thanks for replying Dan..I am interested in starting to grow some 'show' stuff. Its funny you mention the old varieties, as i once grew some 'Red duke of york' in some old tyres years ago, and they produced potatoes which were exactly the same in size..I am definately going to give it a go this year..:)..Thanks for the kick up the arse i needed..:) Dave

I use fish blood and bone and also have a fox near by..I've never had a problem with foxes digging, but the cubs love to play about in fleece, and cloche type polytunnels!

Great vid..I have been wanting to grow some show stuff for a while now. I have grown kestrel before, and they make the tastiest chips in the world..:) This year i have got Anya, Charlotte, Rooster and Apache. Are these any good for show?..I might give it a go this year..I might try some in some stacked old tyres filled with cow muck ..Have you ever used comfrey tea on your spuds?. It is the NPK for potatoes.. Cheers. Dave

I'm growing kestrel again this year. Great looking potato with their purple eyes. I can understand why you pick this variety to show. Good luck Dan. Chris.
