vermiculite is an assumed asbestos, Although not all vermiculite contains asbestos, some products were made with vermiculite that contained asbestos until the early 1990s (wikipedia) why chance it? use something else

Hi John, I just repotted my persimmon tree to a larger pot. Beside from putting mulches on top to help retain water, would you also recommend covering top of the bed with plastic? The reason reason why it is not being plan in the ground because I live in a townhouse with no yard.

Zeolites added to your soil will tie up and bond with heavy metals in you soil sequestering them It's a bioremediator .

The two biggest challenge I see with using the beads from diapers, aka a type of polymer (plastic)
1. They are not a permanent fix, like building your soil organic matter that is a more of a long term fix. They will break down within 3-5 years.
2. When they break down, they add toxins to your soil, known as acrylamides. These not things you want to be eating. They may cause cancer as well as cause neurological and other health problems, and are probably not good for your soil. -
