A Look at My Artichoke Plants - An Easy Perennial
Tips, Tricks
I wanted to show you all how my artichoke plants are doing. They are producing nice sized artichokes as well as many little ones too. I show you how they will sometimes grow in unusual places. If you do not eat the fruit, they will produce beautiful flowers. I think their foliage is attractive as a landscape plant too. Artichokes are a great addition to any sustainable perennial food garden.

Very impressive artichokes! My artichoke video includes a method for cooking and eating them. I have to occasionally stake my artichoke plants but I don't know why some will grow five feet tall (1.5 meters) and others stay shorter. Nice video!

What variety? Yours are huge. Mine seem to open too soon, or at least, they open when they're small...

I've got a perfect spot for these and plan to add them to my edible landscape this year. i was looking for good examples of what they look like in full growth in the yard and this is great. thanks for the video! :)

do they revert to the artichoke thistle form if they seed out and get spiny? Some sources say they do.

Have you tried making artichoke Tea? What part of the desert do you live in, and how cold are your winters? I wonder if you can harvest the leaves to make artichoke tea with. There are alot of Chinese artichoke teas you can get in china town which have excellent benefits. Artichoke is in the thistle family, and thus is great for the liver as well!

After you harvest the artichokes do you cut back the plant at all? After I harvested mine the plant looks like it is dieing.Thx

Do you know would these grow well in England then? Our winters are pretty mild and it only snows maybe once or twice during the winter and rains quite a bit...I'm actually from Michigan originally but was just wondering how well they'd grow here..i love artichokes.

thanks very much! i have 3 plants so i will try to bring one inside and cover the others. thanks for the info brian

We have pretty mild winters here , lowest it gets here is about 20 degrees and the ground doesnt freeze. I don't think they will make it through your winter either but try anyway. maybe if you covered them real well with straw to protect the root they would resprout in spring??You could also grow them in a pot and bring indoors. I have seen others do that successfully.

thanks for the info. what kind of winters do you have? i don't think my chokes will make it through a winter in wisconsin.

Thank you! In my experience it takes until the second year for the plant to become large enough to get an artichoke, then I get them each year after that.
-
great video! thanks! Can you get artichokes the first year planting? brian

Be patient. Water and sun are the key. If you planted from seed it can take two or three years before they start to produce flower buds.
-
I got one started! And its a few months old now. I don't know to plant it in the yard or keep it in a pot. Its getting root bound.

I started one last spring, and it barely made it through last summer, I guess I watered it just enough to keep it alive. It never really took off until the end of this winter. Now it's spring, and it's quite large. I only have one, and I'm wondering when I should start to see some chokes? I don't see any kind of flowers, or anything yet? Thanks for the video, yours look great!

you mentioned that you are in the desert? where abouts?

Thanks for your reply. : > ) I am in Zone 7B. We have also gotten that low at times or lower which is odd for the South. I will try growing inside and thanks so much for your help.
