2 Min. Tip: How & When to Plant My Favorite Winter Greens–Mache & Claytonia
Tips, Tricks
In today’s 2 minute tip, I let you know about two of my favorite winter greens that have no problem surviving the winter here in zone 5 inside a cold frame or a hoop house. And I’ll also let you know when you can plant them in your area for a winter harvest. Mache and claytonia are tender, tasty, cold hardy greens that make a perfect addition to salads during the fall, winter, and early spring. Mache is also known as Corn Salad and you may know Claytonia by the name miner’s lettuce. We’ve been growing both for several years, and they’re two of our most reliable crops during the cold months. One Yard Revolution is all about growing a lot of food on a little land using sustainable organic methods, while keeping costs and labor at a minimum. Emphasis is placed on improving soil quality with compost, mulch, and compost tea. No store-bought fertilizers, soil amendments, pesticides, compost activators, etc. are used. Where do you buy your seeds?
-
do you need to plant these each year? I just put about 12 seeds into pots to start, should I plant more? Im not sure how much you get per seed? Do I need to put a bunch in to get a decent harvest this spring?

Just to add the beds are made of composted steer manure, vermiculite, and sand. thanks

So here in zone 5, what would happen if I planted now? I just built hoop houses like yours, there is not snow on the ground lows are going to be sub 32, highs in the mid 30s to low 50s. Very weird winter so far (well late fall)

A little off the subject, but when you water, are you using just plain city water, or are you using an outdoor filter to remove chlorine, etc from the water?

Been thinking about these leafy greens to plant this fall! Thanks for the reminder!

Will need to try the other. As I mentioned to you before mache and I didn't agree : > )
-
Thanks Patrick, will give these two a try this season.

I love these 2-minute tips you've been doing, hope you're able to keep them coming. I've always heard of miner's lettuce more as a wild edible, and was always curious of it's flavor. I never considered trying to cultivate it myself. How would you describe the flavor? I might like to try this one. Thanks so much!!

I really look forward to trying these out in zone 7a. Should over winter here really well. Thanks.

I'll have to try planting some this. Great video!

Good stuff, Patrick!

Hi Patrick.... Which Elliot Coleman book do you recommend reading first "the winter harvest handbook" or "the four season harvest"?

Nice tip Patrick, sowed mâche yesterday ;) forgot about claytonia :/

One of the things I really love about your channel is all the not so normal vegetables you grow! Although its a double edge sword because it makes me want to hunt them all down and plant them in my garden! Keep up the good work Patrick!
